WJ V: Should You Buy Now?

Introduction

The US edition of the Woodcock-Johnson V (WJ V) has launched — but is it the right time to make the switch? For Australian psychologists and educators, the answer is: not yet. The current WJ V is not designed for our context. Here’s what you need to know before you buy.

Why You Should Wait for the Australian WJ V

PAA, the team behind the Australian editions of WJ III and IV, is currently developing the Australian version of the WJ V. The current US edition does not meet the ethical or contextual requirements for use in Australia.

Key Issues with the Current US Edition:

  • No Australian norms for comparison and interpretation
  • US-centric content, including spelling and measurement units
  • Higher ongoing costs, especially for small schools or clinics
  • No remote administration (requires in-room testing only)

What’s New in WJ V?

The WJ V includes a modernised administration experience via an online platform. With 60 total tests — 20 of which are new — and a reorganised structure, it offers increased flexibility for users. However, these benefits are currently only available in a US-specific edition.

The WJ V (Australian Edition) is Coming

PAA is already working to adapt and publish a fully localised version of WJ V for Australian and New Zealand use:

Project Timeline

  • 2024 Data collection begins in New Zealand (Achievement tests)
  • Late 2024/2025 Data collection begins in Australia
  • 2026 First batteries released for reading and dyslexia
  • 2027 Full Achievement battery released
  • 2028 Cognitive battery released

You can trust PAA to deliver. We developed the Australian versions of WJ III and IV, and we’re building the WJ V the right way – for local professionals.

Pricing: WJ IV vs WJ V (US)

WJ IV (Australia)

  • All three batteries: $3,850 (ex GST) = $320/year over 12 years
  • Cost per assessment: approx. $22 total (all three batteries)

WJ V (US Edition)

  • Subscription-based pricing
  • Up to $40 per assessment depending on usage and student enrolment

PAA has not yet confirmed pricing for the Australian WJ V, but it will be appropriate for local needs and budgets.

Conclusion

WJ IV is still the most appropriate, ethical, and cost-effective option for use in Australia today.

The Australian edition of the WJ V is in development, and it will be worth the wait.
