Description
Problem-solving ability has implications for all areas of life, including interpersonal and work-related relationships. SPSI-R assesses individual’s strengths and weaknesses in their problem-solving abilities so that deficits may be addressed and progress in treatment may be tracked. The instrument may be used in educational, healthcare, corrections or business environments with people who want to explore and develop their social problem-solving abilities.
Two versions of SPSI-R are available: SPSI-R:L (containing 52 items) and SPSI-R:S (containing 25 items). Both measures have five component scales to assess problem-solving styles and solution generation.
- Positive Problem Orientation
- Negative Problem Orientation
- Rational Problem Solving
- Impulsivity/Carelessness Style
- Avoidance Style
SPSI-R:L provides a more comprehensive picture of an individual’s problem-solving strengths and weaknesses through the use of four additional sub-scales that assess different stages of the problem-solving process, such as solution implementation. SPSI-R:S is useful for measuring social problem-solving when respondents are completing a large test batterty or when time is limited.
The SPSI-R normative sample included adolescents, young adults, middle-aged adults, and elderly adults with a total of 1,928 participants. Separate norms are included for each age group. Raw scores are plotted on Profile Sheets for conversion to standard scores.
